Welcome to Hooked on Cycling Holidays and our cycling holiday in Sardinia. Our cycling holiday in Sardinia is available as a seven night guided tour. This cycling holiday follows the fantastic south west coastline of Sardinia which is the least populated on the island. At Hooked on Cycling we have graded this holiday as a level 2 tour.
Sardinia’s southwest forms a rugged wedge of land that just south of the main body of the island into the Mediterranean, its craggy coastline mitigated by some fine beaches. Forests cling to the slopes of its predominantly hilly landscape, which is densely strewn with towns, temples and fortifications founded by Phoenicians, settled by Carthaginians and occupied by Romans. The best preserved ruins are at Tharros, strategically positioned on the southernmost tip of the Sinis peninsula and Nora, a Roman harbour town, dramatically situated on a promontory overlooking the Golf di Cagliari. The Carthaginian remains at Sant’Antioco occupy an equally evocative location on an island joined to Sardinia’s coast by a road causeway; the isle and its neighbour San Pietro, are among the tour’s highlights.

Historically, the regions importance was due mainly to the mining of ores and minerals. Nowadays, mining is over, and the evidence of mineworks, often in a poignant state of abandon, can be seen around Arbus and Nebida, where the Pan di Zucchero outcrop sprouts dramatically out of the sea. The costa del sud offers a highly scenic sequence of inlets punctuated by Spanish watchtowers and Chia has an almost unbroken succession of beaches, probably the best in Southern Sardinia.
Your tour starts in the Sinis peninsula, a wet area whose lagoons have attracted some of Sardinia’s most abundant bird life and are also the place to see the flat-bottomed fassonis, boats still used by the lagoon’s fishermen and hunters, or just for local races. The peninsula’s western coast provides same of the most alluring beaches: Mari Ermi and Is Arutas
GROUP TOUR Available on 4th April , 2nd May and 10th October Level 2 self guided tour
Day 1 Alghero Arrive to Alghero in the northwest region of Sardinia.
Day 2 Alghero - Bosa 42 km From Alghero, a splendid Aragonese (Spanish) city on the Coral Riviera, we bike along a scenic road across the cliffs overlooking the sea and we admire the view of the gulf of Alghero and Capo Caccia. Emotions continue as we catch a glimpse of the pink, red and grey cliffs of Cape Marargiu, over which the last examples of griffin vultures circle. We sleep at Bosa, a medieval town famous for its fine embroidery and gold filigree works.
Day 3 Bosa - San Salvatore Sinis 58 km Today, we travel through Flussio and Tinnura, where, as in days gone by, the women still weave their wicker baskets. Next comes a fascinating panoramic ride down to the Sinis wetlands where you will see colonies of the pink flamingo and we finally reach one of the most beautiful spots on the island: the white quartz beach of Is Arutas. After the Phoenician ruins of Tharros, we go directly to our hotel.
Day 4 San Salvatore Sinis - Arbus 46 km We bike through the plains of Arborea to reach the natural beauty spots of the Costa Verde, some of the most savage scenery on the island, and the Piscinas beach with its sand dunes over 50 m high - the highest in Europe.
Day 5 Arbus- Calasetta 54 km This stage takes us back into the ancient mining past of Sardinia, as we pass the fascinating abandoned mines of Ingurtosu and Masua. After the charming bay of Cala Domestica and the looming mass of the Pan di Zucchero cliff, we reach the old ore washery at Nebida: nestling in the varied colours of the Mediterranean bush, it looks out over the sea and is reached by a long climb down 540 steps Day 6 is then as our Day 6 on he self led tour.
Day 6 Calasetta - S Anna Arresi. 25-28 miles 40-47 km A morning to laze by the pool or explore the coast nearby, or for a short cycle ride around the island with its wealth of coves and beaches, green meadows (or golden in the summer) and little villages. After a visit to Sant’Antioco, cross back to the mainland, to visit the Pisan sanctuary at Tratalias - one of the most important monuments from the Romanesque period. From here you follow the shoreline of lake Monte Pranu and through the rolling plains of Sulcis. Once again, rugged mountains rise up to your left, to around 4,000 ft. Just before the village of Sant' Anna Arresi you reach your hotel, well sited overlooking the emerald green waters of the Golfo di Palmas. Nearby are the bright white beaches of Porto Pino, backed by dunes and Aleppo pine woods.
Day 7 S Anna Arresi - Pula. 38 miles 61km The longest day by distance, but gentle countryside across the rugged coastal plains of the Costa del Sud. This is a remote, wild and beautiful region of Mediterranean bush and coastal pools, gleaming white beaches and imposing cliffs. Cape Malfatano and Cala Piscinnì each boast a 16th C tower, while at Capo Teulada the spectacular cliffs rise more than 700 feet from a translucent sea. A short detour will take you to the beautiful beach of Su Giudeu in Chia, while at Pula is the important Phoenician city of Nora.
Day 8 Tour ends after breakfast, with a transfer available back to Cagliari airport, or bus to Alghero.
